Was the Idea of Curtsying to Kate as Princess of Wales Too Much for The Duchess of Sussex to Handle?

It must have been the curtsy that sent Meghan running from the Palace

Most people in England are proud to curtsy to the Queen and the rest of the royal family. They seem to see it as a privilege and no one really thinks about it twice. But when Meghan arrived on the scene, the British press began to make a big deal about the curtsy. It was as if they were weaponizing it against Meghan, and making it into something humiliating and vile - specifically with regard to her sister-in-law Kate Middleton. They seemed gleeful at the prospect that this foreign-born part African-American wife of the now King's son, would have to curtsy to her English rose counterpart - an adversary who had reduced her to tears on her wedding day and then lied by omission that it was Meghan who had reduced her to tears. Personally, this was the revelations that finally confirmed my suspicions about the Princess of Wales.

Could this be one of the things that sent Meghan reeling? Meghan strikes me as a woman who has very healthy self-esteem and she is also proud. And worse, she is her father's daughter. The irony of that has escaped everyone. Meghan has a lot of her dad, Thomas Markle, in her character. She does not suffer BS very lightly. And for a guy like Thomas Markle, a proud American of seeming working-class roots, this idea of curtsying to the British aristocracy is almost a cruel joke.

I actually don't think that Meghan would have minded if the ladies - her and Kate - had gotten along. If they were friends like Meghan is with Serena Williams, and they were out and about working on joint projects, and meeting for tea and doing yoga together, Meghan would have happily curtsied to Kate.

But a climate of hostility existed between the two. And in the extended royal household, a literal war had been declared against the Duchess. And she knew that that curtsy would have been used as a weapon of humiliation, rather than the harmless tradition it has been for British people. And I think she thought to herself, "I'll be fucking damned." And so that, along with the totality of circumstances, found her high-tailing it out of England.

And when you watch the Crown, you can totally understand what they are really like. And can't blame Meghan. You can only admire her strength. (I am up to the Margaret Thatcher years and, boy!)
