Is Meghan Markle Going to be the First Female President of the United States?
Not sure if that would be constitutional....
No. Meghan is not being groomed to run for president in 2024. These rumors are false. It does not mean that a run for president is completely and categorically ruled out for some time in the future. Meghan is still very young at 40. She has a couple of decades left that she could still do something like that if she wants to but it will not be in 2024.
A lot of people thought she would be running because she was represented by Sunshine Sachs and Sunshine Sachs does PR for a lot of top Democratic candidates. This is just a coincidence. Meghan and Sunshine Sachs have parted ways now anyway, so there goes that rumor.
A run in 2024 is totally unrealistic for Meghan. She does not have enough time to create her platform and form a coalition and flesh out a strategy for that. And there are too many other distractions. Furthermore, as a member of the British royal family, obviously, there are going to be some issues there. She is going to have to give up her title of Duchess of Sussex in order to run for President, I would think. Or maybe not. Who knows. It depends on how people interpret the Constitution. Here is what it says in the Constitution of the United States about "nobility":
Article I, Section 9, Clause 8:
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State
Does this mean that Meghan can't run for president? I honestly don't know. The text is very confusing and I am sure that lawyers can chop that up to bits and make a big stink about the idea of her running just because she is a Duchess. But note that her title, which is one that could be considered a "title of nobility" was not "granted" by the United States. It was "granted" by Queen Elizabeth who was the sitting monarch at the time of Meghan's marriage to Prince Harry.
The article goes on to talk about emoluments and this words has had a lot of play in recent politics in the US as well. But this has nothing to do with the notion of Meghan running for President.
Actually, I am not even sure they could force her to give up her title of Duchess because the Constitution is silent - at least in this clause - on this specific question about whether a member of the British or any other monarchy, could run for president in the United States, if that person is also a citizen of the United States, is over 35 years old, and otherwise meets all the other criteria to be president of the United States.
She could totally be called Missus President, Meghan Duchess of Sussex. The Constitution really does not say that this is prohibited.
With that all said, I do not think Meghan is going to run in 2024. Or even 2028. Maybe in 2032. How old will she be then? About 51? OMG it would be perfect. By then, a lot of the craziness in the news would have subsided. Somebody else would be in the hot seat in Australia and England and she could focus on building her platform and things like that.
It does not mean she could not be an Ambassador of some sort before then. But it's a lot. She can do a lot of different things and she has to be careful to focus her energies. One thing at a time. Right now, she needs to turn a lot of her bad press into gold. She needs to create billions of dollars from it. After, she can think about being President of the United States.
