Meghan: The "Influencer" Princess

Meghan Duchess of Sussex is an Influencer Princess. So what?

Princess Meghan is an influencer and she has never denied it, or tried to shy away from it. One could say that Meghan was born an influencer. We saw how at 11 years old, she set out to "influence" the way that the media and advertisers viewed women and moms. She has never stopped exerting her influence since those early days.

Through her work with the UN, as well as her blog The Tig, and with her endorsement deals and her work as an actor, she has continued this trend of being an influencer. She leads by example, one could say. Now that she and Harry have married and have created their foundation Archewell, her opportunities for being an influencer have stratospherically multiplied.

Some people see that as a negative. One YouTuber claimed that Duchess Meghan is "bringing down the Monarchy" by lowering herself to influencer status and reverting to her pre-Duchess days.

But is that a fair criticism? Who, after all, is a bigger influencer than a British princess? Look at Princess Margaret. Look at Princess Anne. Look at Princess Diana. Look at Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. Everybody wanted to be like them, wear what they wore and live vicariously through them.

They are not the only ones. Princesses have always been influencers. In the 1980s Princess Stephanie of Monaco was the biggest influencer for girls who wanted to smoke, wear black leather jackets, and date bad boys.

It is true that British princesses have always been more reserved than Princess Stephanie. Except when they break loose. Princess Margaret was a rebel in her own right, who was very much an influencer among those in her generation. She drank liberally and smoked her way through her youth and she was very stylish and she dated a much younger man. Of course, this influenced the women in her generation to indulge their own independence, and individuality, and sleep with whomever they wanted. Princess Anne was also an influencer for her generation because she did it her way. She was very independent, just like her aunt Margaret was, and she did her own thing, which is very inspiring to people - especially women her own age.

And there is Kate Middleton, the modern princess who is such an influencer as far as fashion goes. Everything she wears sells out, like her recent Karen Millen outfit for a royal engagement. UK influencer Lydia Millen who also reps the brand has been raving about Kate's sartorial choice for months now.

So how dare people act as if being a princess or duchess precludes Meghan from being an influencer? Is that not the whole point of being a princess or duchess or a royal? Is to "influence"?
